Problems with GroupStudy
I would like to apologize for the recent GroupStudy outages. I have been running GroupStudy since 1998 and every year GroupStudy has gone down while I was on vacation. This year I was backpacking in Aspen, CO, miles from any internet access points.
I have been having problems with one of the servers in Texas. The server send about 1.5 GB/day of traffic. Recently the server has been running out of memory and crashing. I added additional swap space as a band-aid solution until I can build a new server. There are a few things you can do to help. If you notice you are not receiving e-mail messages, go to http://lists.groupstudy.com and see if the web page is responsive. If not, please send me a private e-mail with the subject 3LISTS.GROUPSTUDY.COM is Down2.
Send me an e-mail saying you can not receive e-mail does not work as I receive about 10 of those a day, even when GroupStudy is working fine. In most cases it is always a local problem and takes me hours to investigate.
Again, I apologize for the inconvenience. I have big plans to make GroupStudy the home you guys deserve, just need money and time to make it happen. The current software is mostly custom scripts I wrote over 10 years ago. To put that in perspective, some of the scripts are older than Google, and virtually the entire site is older than Facebook.
Thanks for sticking with GroupStudy!
Paul Borghese

Thank you Paul! You are very appreciated!
Personally I see no reason to apologize for a free service having a problem. Shoot we are all grateful for what you do for it.

Paul, No need to apologize. Being an often silent member of groupstudy, I have both benifit and contributed to this very educational and vibrant forum.
I know I speak for many, when I say “Thank You”. For doing such a great service to all Cisco Network Engineers out there in pursuit of the elusive CCIE lab certifications.

I will second that. Much respect. Paul, you created a monster and I am sure this beast is hard to tame sometimes.
I thought you were going to give up Cisco and go in to the Gas Station business with Darby or something.
Serious question – HOW DO WE DONATE?

Paul,
I thought it was just a way of telling the rest of us to all take some time off!
I hope you got to enjoy your vacation and not be inundated with messages/voicemails along the way!
Karma always does things at the least opportune times, but as a free service, I think it’s good to keep perspective on stuff.
You’re doing a wonderful job! And if you need/want help with things even as far as equipment/whatever, I’m sure there are plenty around here who would be more than willing to help out! I’m certainly one!
