Video Tutorial On OSPF Sham-Links
If you are interested in learning about sham-links and how to configure them, you can check out my latest video tutorial over on our youtube channel. The link is It is a demonstration of the OSPF sham-link on real equipment with a brief explanation of why we need it.
I thought it might be useful for some people out there studying! Have a great day!
Nice video Joe, makes me want to mess around with the SP track.

Hi Joe, Great explanation, thanks for that. However, I have one question regarding the manipulation of costs. I know that the cost on the backup link was at a minimum of one, however if we were to manipulate the cost in such a way that the better cost would be define in the area X sham-link cost statement; would there be any functional differences? Also, with the absense of the cost value in the area X sham-link, how exactly is the cost derived for the sham-links?
Thanks again for the video.
Regards, Nasser.

Thanks, Nice and informative video Joe,
I think the OSPF cost can also be set specific to the sham-link on the sham-link command with “cost X” added to the end of it to avoid setting interface cost…
Might come in handy if there are more than one sham-link being originated I guess…

Just watched the vid. Very nice. Amazing to see how quick it goes. Even though sham links are a lot like virtual links, I do see their value. I’ve always thought that if you have to use virtual links that you did not design your network correctly or you didn’t build / implement a proper acquisition integration plan.
